Biography of Jack Kelly * |
---|
HERITAGE NO : 526 When the Saints turned up for the match against Leeds at Headingley, during the war years, they were short of playing personnel. One such addition to the side was a player borrowed from the opposition. Jack Kelly was a former member of Bramley Old Boys RUFC, who was normally a forward, or so we thought, but was placed in the St. Helens threequarter line at the request of the home club. In 1939 Jack lived at Glebe Avenue, Leeds and worked as an Engine Stoker on a Locomotive. He died in Leeds in March 1992, aged 75. If anyone has any further details about this player or an image, we would like to hear from you. Fast forward to 2020 and we have some further information, courtesy of Leeds Historian David Sinclair, who points out that Jack Kelly played one game for Saints as a guest against Leeds. "In your biog you state that he was a forward and Leeds asked that he be played in the threequarters. Kelly was primarily a full back and played wing and centre as well, never in the forwards." Thanks for putting us right on that one, David. |
