BIOGRAPHY

Matty Smith was a very smart scrum half who could always be relied upon when he was drafted into the first team, invariably when deputising for Sean Long. He possessed neat footwork, tactical awareness and an excellent kicking game. Matty made his debut in a tight away victory over Huddersfield on the 12th of March, 2006. He scored a try in his next game against Harlequins in the home 30 points to 24 league victory.

In 2007, injury to Sean Long enabled Matty to have an extended run of first team games at scrum half. He scored a try and kicked a goal in the 40 points to 12 win against Warrington at the HJ Stadium. He was also instrumental in sealing two points for the Saints in the home victory over Salford on the first of June 2007. In this match the scores were locked at 26 points apiece with only a minute to run in the match. Following a Saints drive the ball was switched back to Matty who slotted over a superb drop goal to send the crowd into a frenzy. At the end of the season Matty played in the Qualifying Semi Final against Leeds in a brutal encounter. Matty played his part in what is rated as the Saints best ever defensive display. Moreover, Matty kicked three vital goals as the Saints prevailed by 10 points to 8.

The 2008 season saw Matty feature in league games against Hull and Catalans Dragons. In the former match Matty kicked 5 goals and scored a try in a 30 points to 29 victory. In France he kicked one goal but it was not enough to seal victory for the Saints on this occasion.

During this year Matty decided to move on loan to Widnes to gain regular first team experience. This loan was then further extended to South Wales where Matty decided to ply his trade with the Celtic Crusaders when they were provided with a Super League franchise at the start of the 2009 season.

Matty returned to the Saints, from his loan spell at Salford, for the 2010 Grand Final run as injuries to half backs disrupted the team. Matty played in the 2010 Grand Final only to end up on the losing side.

After a remarkable career away from his hometown club Matty returned to the fold after captaining Wigan Warriors to a 2016 Grand Final success.
