|Tommy was one of the members of the successful Saints A-team of the late 1940s, he played occasionally in the First Team as a prop, hooker or loose forward. A former St.Helens schoolboy hooker and an amateur with the YMCA and Parr Legionnaires, he joined Saints in the 1947/48 season - the same week as George Parsons and Steve Llewellyn. He found opportunities limited at Knowsley Road and moved to Warrington in 1951/52 for a couple of seasons before retiring. Tommy later coached the UGB team for a spell. |
Tommy made his debut in the away Challenge Cup tie against Burlingsthorpe Vale on Valentines Day, 1948 when Saints defeated the gallant amateurs by 13 points to 2. That was his only outing of that season. In the 1948/9 campaign Tommy played in the Saints team that were narrowly defeated in the 12 points to 10 in the away fixture at Keighley, again this was his only appearance that season. In the 1949/50 season Tommy played his only appearance at prop in the tough away league match at Workington when the Saints lost by 5 points to nil. In his last campaign Tommy was drafted in three times to play hooker against Liverpool Stanley, Warrington and York. The first match resulted in a 26 points to 4 victory (the only time Tommy collected a winning pay packet) with the York fixture ending in a tight six points each draw.
In 1939 Tommy was living in Gladstone Street, St Helens and he was working as a Painter and Decorator. He died in St Helens in December 2004, aged 84.
