Biography of Walter Wright



HERITAGE NO : 322
Walter Wright was an elusive and smart winger for the Saints in the period between 1923 and 1926. He actually started his first team duties at full back before yielding that position to Charlie Crooks. His 102 matches came at a time when the Saints were building their great inter-war team and competition was tight for first team places.

His best scoring season was the 1925/26 season when he scored 18 tries in 35 matches including braces against Warrington, Bradford Northern on two occasions, Broughton Rangers, Keighley and Leigh from the right wing position. Eventually Walter lost his place in the first team to players like George Cotton and Alf Frodsham. This is best illustrated in his last season when In October 1926 he played and scored in the first two rounds of the Lancashire Cup, but lost out to George Cotton who appeared in the great local Lancashire Cup Final against St Helens Recs the following month. Nevertheless his century plus appearances and significant try haul demonstrate his stature at the time.

Outside rugby Walter was a Police Sergeant who was found in the 1939 at the Police Station in Warrington Road, Whiston. His actual address was in Doulton Street, St Helens. He died prematurely in St Helens in December 1946, aged 48.
