Biography of Frank Wright

HERITAGE NO : 364
Relatively little is known about this player, suffice to say that he joined the Saints from Batley and after a handful of matches went to join the Army. He is remembered however for getting on the end of fierce criticism from legendary journalist Tom Reynolds, who was also known as Premier, after one particularly fiery performance at Widnes. Part of this is reproduced here: "Wright must cure his recklessness. He is fearless as a lion but he must use his strength and his courage fairly. We want no dirt. We get the rotten stuff from some of the dirty Yorkshire forwards when they are playing in Yorkshire but want none of it for or against us. Wright will make a splendid addition to the Saints forwards if he will use his ability the right way. If heavy tackling is the order, then let him tackle as heavily as he wishes, so long as it is fair. If Wright will take a tip from me it pays to play fair. It does not pay to play dirty. Because I can see the possibility of Wright becoming a valuable man to St.Helens, I am talking to him very frankly indeed. His efficiency will be all the greater if he will take the advice in the spirit it is given for his own benefit."
Frank came back to training at the start of the 1930-31 season and was welcomed back after having played football in the Forces, but as far as we can make out, there was no permanency. He might well have played a few A Team matches, but we are not sure. Outside rugby we do know that he worked as a Machine Iron Moulder and in 1939 he was living in Royds Hall Road, Leeds. He died in June 1972,aged 67 and his death was registered in Wharfedale, Yorkshire. If you have any further information about this player after he left St.Helens RFC, then we would like to hear from you.
