Tommy Woods

An extract from the St Helens v Halifax Programme for 14 March 1925 provided by Adrian Lawrenson and Curtis Johnstone.

Age 23 Height 5ft 5 ins Weight 9st 8lbs

Tommy Woods first played football at the same seat of learning as Alf Frodsham and Walter Wright, Knowsley Road School, and whatever heights of excellence in other directions its schoolboys have attained there is not the slightest doubt this school has put the first kick into many good rugby footballers.

Tommy afterwards played in Junior League Football with St Patricks being the scrum-half. Again accompanying Wright he joined Brunswick and assisted that team in winning the Medal Competition, two games of which they won in one day, beating Gerrards Bridge [with whom Tommy White played out-half] and YMCA, the latter having Jack Halton at stand-off.

They had to play Gerrards Bridge twice as the Bridge protested against Jack Bacon who played for Leigh. The Saints signed Tommy from Clock Face where he was playing at scrum-half and his first match for us was against Recs A at City Road where we lost 5pts to 14pts.

There can be no two opinions about the excellence of play put up by this little ‘box of tricks’ and no opponent is too great for Tommy’s deft touches. Withal he has great confidence in his ability to win through to the scoring line.
