Joe Wilson by SHS
Joe was a local lad and a real speed merchant who played for the First Team in the difficult days after the Second World War. He made his debut in the 10-10 draw with Belle Vue Rangers in Manchester on 16th November 1946 with Welshman Elwyn Bowen as his centre. Ironically, Sonny Doyle scored two tries from the other flank, with a couple of goals from another local lad, Joe Ball. His second appearance was at Station Road against Swinton and although Joe did nothing wrong, he could not get on the scoresheet. It was his centre, Jimmy Stott, who scored a hat-trick of tries, using him as a foil for a couple of them. Perhaps Joe did not mind too much as it did mean winning money, as Saints won 15-6. Tom Stott, in the other centre position also kicked two goals.
It was another awayday for Tom on 6th May 1947, when Rochdale Hornets beat the Saints at the Recreation ground. Tom became very much a regular in the A team and his last senior appearance was against Salford at Knowsley Road on 3rd February 1951. At last it was a Saints win although Joe was not on the scoresheet. The threequarter line was a powerful one, however and read as follows: Steve Llewellyn, Duggie Greenall, Vivian Harrison and Joe Wilson. There were 14,000 fans there to see it.
Joe later went to Australia and settled in Victoria, where he was employed as a fireman and also in security. The desire to play rugby never left him and he played rugby union for the Power House XV in Victoria and was also a state representative. One of his matches for the state was against the visiting New Zealand Under 19s, a powerful team that included such luminaries as Colin Meads and Wilson Whineray.
Joe later returned to the UK and worked first of all at Pilkingtons, followed by a spell at Fords in Speke. The SHS would like to thank his son, Dave, for help with this biography.
