 HERITAGE NO : 960 Kevin was a solid full back who made the best possible start to his career at the Saints. he scored a try in his first two matches in the first team. He played at a time when Saints were very much in a transitional period in the early 1980s alongside a very young local squad of players. Kevin also had the bonus of touring New Zealand with the Saints at the end of the very successful 1984 to 1985 season. Of course, carving out a career at a club like St Helens involves having a certain amount of skill but it encompasses good timing and luck too. Kevin’s problem was that Phil Veivers was in his first season of a long career at Saints and was idolised by the Saints’ faithful. As a young player himself, Kevin seemingly had limited opportunities in the short or long term. Signed from Pilks Recs on 7 March 1981, Kevin made his debut for the club in the 24-13 defeat at Hull on 20 March 1983 and went on to make 26 appearances, 8 from the bench, scoring 2 tries for the club in the process. His last game coincidentally was also against Hull at Knowsley Road on 29 September 1985 when an under-strength Saints’ side lost 22-35. Perhaps one of the highlights of his time at the club included the tour of New Zealand in 1985. His most memorable match for Saints was at Thrum Hall, Halifax, on 17 March 1985 in a 19-19 draw. A weakened Saints’ side played against a home team crammed with Australian players. Saints, who gave on-loan hooker Gary Ainsworth his debut that day, were bolstered by a Mal Meninga masterclass to bring home a hard-earned point that perhaps they had no real right to expect. |
