Biography of Tom Waring |
---|
HERITAGE NO : 600 Tom Waring by SHS A member of a famous local sporting family, Tom was a teenager when he made his debut at left centre [his winger was Edwin Prescott] against Wakefield Trinity at Belle Vue on 26th February 1944. 'Success at 16 ' Tom Waring's debut at Wakefield' said the St. Helens Newspaper. Their noted correspondent, Premier, took up the story: 'Tom Waring made history at Wakefield on Saturday. He took part in first-class rugby at the age of 16 and is probably the first St. Helens player to do so [Scrum-half Harold Briscoe? SHS]. Jack, Gerald and Tom look like writing a big chapter in the history of St. Helens rugby football in the years to come. Jack, as all of us know, is one of the most successful fly-halves or centres on the club's books. Gerald, lesser known, came first into the limelight against Keighley a season ago, whilst still in his early teens. He scored two good tries that day, and generally indicated that regular practice in good company would do as much for him as it did for brother Jack. Tom is the biggest lad at his age on the Saints' register. In football rig he looks like a man'' Tom, who lived in Doulton Street, a drop-kick away from Saints' ground, made his almost premature debut against Wakefield Trinity at Belle Vue and was a stalwart in the threequarters for the reminder of the season. Apparently it wasn't always an easy ride, but Premier certainly seemed to have faith in him, as he wrote after the Dewsbury match just before Christmas at Knowsley Road: 'Waring has not been altogether at his best this season, but I have never wavered in the belief that I would not move him for any other player bar [Stan] Brogden. This burly, slow-starting youngster, a man in physique but a boy in years, is marked for great things if he is only tutored the right way'. Unfortunately, Tom's promise and longevity at Knowsley Road was not fulfilled. His last match for the seniors was at Batley, on 26th January 1946, when the Saints lost 0-15 to the Gallant Youths. Tom was right centre to the flier 'Sonny' Doyle that day. Tom lived in Doulton Street, St Helens. He died in November 2016, aged 89. |
