Jack Waring Obituary by Denis Whittle (3rd June 2004)

A former Rugby League player who rocketed to international status after just one season with Saints has died at the age of 84. Jack Sogger Waring of O'Sullivan Crescent, Blackbrook died in Whiston Hospital following a short illness. A widower, he leaves four children, nine grandchildren and one great-grand-child. A member of a family of 11 raised in Doulton Street, just a drop-kick from Saints ground, Jack was one of four brothers to play professional rugby, the others being Tommy (Saints), Gerald (Warrington) and Bill (St.Helens Recs).

Jack cut his oval ball teeth at St.Teresas school before figuring as an amateur with Thatto Heath and Star Rovers. He scored a hat-trick on his debut for Saints A Team in 1938 and then became a regular First Teamer.

Pre-war days at Knowsley Road found Waring sharing dressing room pegs with household names such as Frank Tracey, Jack Bradbury and George Porky Davies. The highlight of Jack's career came at Watersheddings, Oldham in 1940 when he appeared for England against Wales, the 21 year old scoring a last-minute try to earn his country an 8-5 victory.

Pathe News featured the crucial touchdown at local cinemas and the Waring family has made many attempts to obtain the nostalgia-soaked footage. Another abiding memory of the game was that it was interrupted by an air-raid warning for fully eight minutes!

By now Jack had been summoned for duty in the Royal Artillery, but he still managed to guest for Dewsbury, managed by his namesake Eddie Waring, who later went on to TV fame as a commentator on the game.

Like so many of his generation, Jack found his rugby career curtailed by the war and a serious knee injury although he played in Services Rugby Union matches against Australia, New Zealand and south Africa.

Following demob, Jack played for Belle Vue Rangers, Featherstone and Warrington, where he was in the same side as his brother Gerald (a D-Day veteran) and it was at Wilderspool Stadium that he finally hung up his boots as A Team Coach in 1951.

Many rugby league personalities of an earlier era were present at his funeral, held at St.Paul`s Church, Blackbrook in June 2004. The skilled Labourer was 84 when he died.
