 HERITAGE NO : 518 Gerald Waring by SHS A member of the famous rugby family from St. Helens, Gerald made an impressive debut against Keighley at Lawkholme Lane on 20th September 1941 by running in two tries. He ended up playing 8 matches during the campaign, his last being a 5-8 reversal at Oldham on 21st January, when Saints lost 5-8. According to his former team-mate Jimmy Goodier, Gerald, who could play centre or wing was: 'a big lad, like his other brother Tom and let me tell you he was a handy footballer too. I didn't think he really got the credit he deserved for that'. Gerald did play one match with his other brother Jackie at Castleford on 29th November 1941. Saints lost 5-12 and Jackie would soon be overseas on active service; Gerald would not feature in the First Team afterwards and 16-year-old brother Tom would then take up the cudgels on behalf of the Waring family at Knowsley Road! After military service, which included action on D Day, Gerald later joined Warrington. His brother Jackie was also there as a coach too. In 1939 he was working as a Glassmaker's Labourer and living in Doulton Street, St Helens. He died in his hometown in March 1974, aged 51. |
