Biography of George Warburton

HERITAGE NO : 201
George Warburton played 12 matches for the Saints first team from September 1910 to April 1911. He was a speedy left winger who scored four tries against Runcorn, Batley, Leigh and Salford. The newspaper report of his debut game against Merthyr Tydfil mentions that he had been playing for the Salford A team.

The Saints had a good campaign and competition was fierce to secure a first team slot. His four tries in 12 matches was a commendable outcome for that era of the game. George played on the left wing and had seemed to have nailed down his berth as the season came to an end. Perhaps, he suffered an injury which curtailed his career in April 1911.

George had a very good reputation as an all round sportsman. He played Rugby Union for a local Wirral team, Asford House. A newspaper report provides details of George when he signed for Salford. He was 5ft 8 inches tall and weighed in at 11 stones 8 lbs. He was regarded as a speedy man and apparently won many prizes on the track. It also mentioned that he had played football for Cheshire against Lancashire in recent times. When he played for the Salford Reserves against Widnes A he was again described as `The Cheshire County` man. Incidentally, his centre in that match was Joe Lavery the former All Black and recently released by the Saints. In another article, when the Salford Reserves team entertained Leigh A, the report mentioned that George Warburton played as a reserve.

He was living at Kingstown Street, Tranmere, Birkenhead with his widowed mother, Elizabeth, and his sister`s family in 1911 and working as a Ships Draughtsman for the Cammell Laird Company. Just before the war broke out he has secured a post as Departmental manager at Palmers Shipbuilding Yard in Jarrow on Tyne, a job which he fulfilled until going the Royal Engineers in August 1916. He later transferred his commission to the Royal Flying Corps.

The SHS are sad to related that George lost his life in an air accident in October 1917 whilst serving with the Royal Flying Corps. He was a Second Lieutenant and must have known the perils of flying what was a relatively new technology. George was engaged in a training flight over his air base in Norfolk when his plane caught fire and nose-dived to earth causing fatal serious injuries to George. He left behind a son William who was born in 1912 and a grieving family in Tranmere, Birkenhead. His mother had to contribute money to have his name added to a memorial stone in Birkenhead; one is left bereft with that piece of information.

The St Helens Club are always passionate about remembering those who paid the ultimate sacrifice in the two World Wars. George is one of eight past players who perished in the Great War. It is a tale of great interest and surprising detail and should be widely read.

We must acknowledge the kindness and brilliant contributions of George`s great grandson. Mark Warburton who furnished the SHS with marvellous biographical details and the stunning photographs of George.
