Biography of Joe Twist

HERITAGE NO : 566
Joe Twist by SHS

A player who helped the club survive through the rigours of the Second World War, George Ormiston Twist, otherwise known as Joe, was one of five children from New Cross Street and played three matches, two of them of a competitive nature. The other was very much a reflection of the times, a game against the Army at Knowsley Road.

Both competitive matches, in the War Emergency League were against Oldham. In the first clash, at Watersheddings, the Saints went down 6-12, despite two tries from namesake Peter Twist and forceful front rower George Davies. In the return match at Knowsley Road, the Saints turned the tables, although it was a tight encounter. Two tries from winger Austin Yates, whose image on the site is of him in his RAF uniform, plus further touchdowns from Knowles and Jimmy Stott gave the Saints winning pay that afternoon.

A Local Government Officer in St Helens, his military commitments took over and he was soon fighting the Nazis as a member of the Royal Signals, serving as part of Montgomery’s 8th Army in North Africa. He was captured and shipped back to Germany where he spent time as a prisoner of war.

On being repatriated to Blighty, he resumed his work for St Helens Council. Joe was a capable athlete, who also boxed and played rugby in his army days. His son, Andy, recalls that the great winger Alf Ellaby was his Dad’s favourite player over the years and he was always a regular at matches at Knowsley Road for most of his life before his passing in 1987.
