Around 1907 a dark-haired, wiry young man from Cumbria descended on St.Helens with his mind concentrated on whippets! Fred Trenwith was supposed to complete a business deal in sporting dog flesh and then accompany a friend to South Africa. Yet the whippet trail ended in St.Helens, with Fred signing for the Saints. He was a rough and ready, though skilful, scrum-half, who had gained quite a reputation for the Askam and Millom clubs back home and Saints got their man. He was persuaded to forget all about whippets on the acceptance of a '20 signing on fee that bound him to the St.Helens club for the rest of his career ' 16 years to be precise! During that time he was honoured by Lancashire and earned a 'substantial' Benefit of '190.

Fred was the Saints' scrum half during their marvellous Challenge Cup run in 1915, when the team reached the final only to be battered 37-3 by Huddersfield's Team of all the Talents, in the Final at Watersheddings. Rumour has it that the Committee refused to pay out bonuses promised for reaching the Final, causing a dressing room revolt of the players, only quelled by the captain Tom Barton. Yet during the cup run, Trenwith had performed his party piece, whereby on the call of 'Beechams' the pack would fan out and Trenny would burrow through for the inevitable touchdown. He did so at Keighley and the home crowd were so incensed, they threw all sorts at the Saints players ' and had their ground closed for a spell as a result.

Fred was a tough, combative little so-and-so, who could tackle well above his own weight, very much in the Tommy Bishop category. A local firm once offered an overcoat to any Saints' player who scored three tries in a match. 'Trenny' was playing against Treherbert and had already scored two tries, when he was carried off the field. 'They took me over the touchline and didn't want me to go back,' he recalled later. 'I said I still needed another try to get the overcoat, and when they weren't looking, I dodged onto the field and managed to score the third just before time.'

A roller at a St.Helens lead works, Fred gave yeoman service to the Saints and formed an impressive half-back partnership with Matt Creevey, himself a world standing jump champion and music hall turn, known as the Human Panther. No wonder life at Knowsley Road was so interesting in those days just before the Great War! Fred moved to St Helens permanently and the 1911 Census has him resident in Kirkland Street. The Iron Ore Labourer died in St Helens in August 1960 aged 74.
