Biography of Robert Thompson

HERITAGE NO : 578
Robert Thompson was a grafting forward who played for the Saints during World War Two. He played five matches for the club in the back row or at prop forward. He was a tough customer and hard tackler. Thompson could also kick goals. He booted over two goals for the Saints in a match against Barrow in October 1943. In 1939 he was living with his wife Eliza in Caunce Street, Ince, Wigan and working as a Labourer in a local Steel Works.

In 1921 Robert was living in Penfold Street, Ince, Wigan. He was living with his father, John a Miner at the local colliery in Hindley Green, mother Alice, two brothers and one sister. Robert married Eliza McDade in October 1937. We believe that Robert had a daughter named Eileen who was born in December 1942 and sadly died in 2023. Robert joined the Royal Scots Fusiliers during World War 2. Sadly he was not to make it back to his home in Wigan. RJ Thompson, #3455013, was killed on the 10th of November, 1944. Robert was one of seven Saints whose life was cut short by the conflict.

We would dearly love to contact family members or receive an image of Robert or any other playing or personal details.
