Biography of John Tembey

HERITAGE NO : 790
John Tembey by Dave Dooley:
John Tembey was a tough hard-hitting forward for the club playing over 100 matches in the mid-sixties. Born in Kells (Cumberland), he signed from Whitehaven in the New Year of 1962. John made his debut against Barrow in the 30 to 6 points home victory on the 6th. January 1962. John was a fearsome driver of the ball with a neat offload when being tackled. In defence he was an exemplary tackler. In this first half-season John only played three more games for the Saints all in the second row position.

John Tembey scored his first try for the Club against Salford on September 1st. 1962 in the 59 points to nil humiliation of Salford in the Western Divisional Championship. He promptly followed up with a second touchdown in the same match. The following month on 27th.October, 1962 John was in the second row when the Club won the Lancashire Cup as Saints defeated Swinton by 7 points to 4 in front of a crowd of over 23 000 at Central Park. John continued to play in the second row until March 23rd. 1963 when he was given the number eight jersey in the 38 points to nil thrashing of Bramley. For the next two years John was virtually unrivalled for the position despite the wealth of forwards coming through the Saints` ranks at the time. He completed his first full season having played 41 matches with a haul of nine tries.

The following season John was in the front row as Saints lifted the Lancashire Cup for the fourth year in succession. This time the opposition was Leigh as 21 231 spectators witness Saints overcome the Leythers by 15 points to 4. In the 1963/64 season John played 41 matches notching five tries in the process.

The 1964/65 was another full campaign for John Tembey. He collected his third Lancashire Cup winners medal as Saints again disposed of Swinton by 12 points to 4 in front of a crowd of 17 383 at Central Park on October 24th. 1964. The start of that particular season was an incredible experience for Saints` fans at the time. The team won its first 21 matches of the season with John Tembey wearing the number eight jersey in nineteen of those games. By the end of the season Saints topped the table having conceded only 226 from 34 league matches (an average of less than 7 points conceded per match) - and Saints were renowned for their attacking play at the time! The penultimate match that season was the Western Divisional Championship Final against Swinton at Central Park. On the 16th. May, 1964 in front of 17 363 spectators Saints defeated a talented Swinton side by 10 points to 7 with Tembey amply filling his number eight jersey. John Tembey played a big part in that solid defence. For the record John played 39 matches and came on as substitute twice as he scored five tries for the club in that campaign.

The following season saw changing fortunes for John as a raft of talented forwards pressed hard for a starting position in the pack. John was eventually out of favour as the Club attempted to maintain the winning formula that had put together another incredible unbeaten run in the league in the first four months of the season. In the end John moved on to Warrington and Albert Halsall was brought in take over the open side prop position. Tembey played his final game for the Saints against Barrow on the 9th. of October, 1965, his parting gift was a try as the Saints prevailed by 18 points to 14.

John Tembey played 135 (+ two as substitute) matches for the club. He scored 20 tries and kicked no goals for an aggregate score of 60 points. His outstanding efforts for the Saints brought him international caps for Great Britain and county caps for Cumberland.

Sadly John passed away on 28th. July, 1994.
