It is presumed that John is the elder brother of Saints� winger Tom Sudlow, although John was a member of the forward pack. Both were born in Warrington and lived in Winwick Street. Their father was a wire spooler. John made his debut against Morecambe in a league match at Knowsley Road on 9th January 1897. Saints won 3-0 thanks to a penalty goal from skipper Tom Foulkes. The St. Helens Reporter on 12th January 1897 stated that there had been a shake-up in selection for that particular match: �The sturdy fishermen of Morecambe paid their visit to St. Helens on Saturday where they are always welcome visitors. As fore-shadowed last week, the Saints have been making strong efforts to get their house in order in view of getting a strong combination together to fight out the cup ties. And, in consequence, T. Sudlow, Doherty and Rimmer once more appeared in the team, while J. Sudlow of the A Team, together with Thompson of Staveley, also donned the blue and white jersey.�

The 1897-98 campaign saw John play a significantly greater number of matches for the seniors, making 19 appearances and scoring three tries. His last match for the club was at Oldham on 12th February 1898, when the Saints lost 0-11 at Watersheddings. Outside rugby John was employed as a Wireworker and Galvanizer. In 1939 we find him living in Orford Avenue, Warrington. His death is registered in Farnworth in December 1952 at the age of 85. If anyone has any further information about this player, we would love to receive it.
