Biography of Tommy Stott

HERITAGE NO : 548
Tommy was the younger of the of two Stott brothers who were so prominent at Knowsley Road in the 1940s. Tommy was a centre who was also a very reliable goal-kicker. He was a versatile player and after 1948 he appeared for the club at loose forward, winger and full back as well as donning his favourite centre jersey. In all Tommy kicked 89 goals for the Saints including seven in a match against Featherstone Rovers. However his greatest feat was in May 1947 as part of the 29 points to nil drubbing of Bramley when Tommy crossed for a hat trick of tries and also booted over 3 goals. After a decade with the Saints Tommy moved on to Swinton in his twilight playing days, writes Dave Dooley.

It is also interesting to note that Tom's debut against Leeds initiated a change of [original] position for the youngster. Premier in the St. Helens Newspaper gave us a unique insight into what actually happened at Headingley: 'Stott junior, a seventeen year old making his debut had been selected to play as fly-half. Stott senior [Jimmy] promptly vetoed the idea as soon as he arrived. He objected to a schoolboy's heart being broken, and perhaps, his immature frame as well, by a bout with Vic Hey. So the novice went on the wing as Jimmy's partner. In his place came a young soldier laddie we had never seen before, named Davies. He was 'just a kid' so to speak, but a well-built one, and much better able to face Vic Hey than [Tom] Stott was. As a matter of fact he put up a most valiant show'.

This timely intervention by Jimmy Stott shielded his younger brother from Vic hey, the Australian international, who was a real handful most of the time. As for Tom himself, he could always be seen at the Edington End of the Popular Side, watching his favourite team, for many years after his retirement from the game. A really great guy! The gallery shows his family receiving the Heritage Certificate at the Heritage Day in August 2019. The UGB sorter died in St Helens in March 1997, aged 77.
