Jimmy Stott was a stalwart for the club playing almost 200 matches mostly as a centre. He made his debut in Saints on the 4th of November 1939 against Broughton Rangers. He was born in Spurgeon Street off Park Road on the 15th of November 1919. Jimmy Stott was a great all-round sportsman who attended the rugby league hotbed of Parr Central School.

Jimmy was signed from the local UGB amateur team, incidentally Jimmy also worked for the glass firm. In 193 matches for the Saints Jimmy scored 65 tries, kicked 295 goals (11th on the all-tine charts for the Saints) for an impressive total points aggregate of 785 points (15th position).

During the war Jimmy played two Services internationals against Rugby Union sides. After spending six years in the Army, he returned to Knowsley Road to captain the side after the hostilities.

Jimmy played for Great Britain once in 1947, he also won two England and two Lancashire caps whilst at Knowsley Road. He was a model player on and off the field and an inspirational captain who guided many young players who were to become a key part of the St Helens set-up in the 1950s. His brother Tom also played for the Saints.

His final match for the Club was against Warrington on the 22nd. of November 1952. He subsequently retired from the game. Like so many fine players his career was blighted by the outbreak of the Second World War. Jimmy Stott died on the 5th of July 1994 at the age of 74.

Jimmy Stott has been inducted into the Club Hall of Fame.

Bert Traverse relates a tale that illustrates the character and integrity of Jim Stott. He had served Saints as a centre threequarter for many years when Jim Sullivan arrived at the club. The new coach promptly switched him to full back, a situation Stotty accepted though was never truly happy with it. His last game was against Warrington at Wilderspool. Jack Johnson, a St Helens lad playing on the wing for the Wire, was sent away with only Stott to beat. As he approached the full back Johnson kicked over his head raced round Stotty, re-gathered the ball and scored a brilliant try. After the match Sullivan had words with Jim Stott and gave him the benefit of his vast experience as a full back. `If that happens again,` he said, `turn your back on the kicker and stick your arse in him. That way you won`t be penalised for committing an obstruction.`

`I`m sorry, Mr Sullivan,` Jim Stott said, `but I don`t play my rugby that way.` He immediately retired.

Jimmy died in St Helens in July 1994, aged 74.
