Tony Stewart was Wigan-born on the 5th. of March 1979 and was raised in Hindley. Tony signed for Saints from the Hindley ARL club. He eventually established himself as a first team regular combining nimble footwork, clinical finishing and a safe pair of hands.

His debut match was against Paris St Germain on the 31st. of August, 1997. His first points for the club came in the home Premiership Trophy tie against Salford when he scored a try in a comfortable 26 points to 12 victory. In the 1999 season Ellery Hanley was determined to give young players a chance to prove themselves in the Super League. That season Stewart made 20 starts and came on as a substitute on 3 occasions scoring 11 tries in the process. Although he was essentially a winger Tony played matches at centre and full back as circumstances demanded.

In 2000 Tony made only 12 appearances and scored four touchdowns. The 2001 season started brilliantly for Tony and the Saints with the winning of the World Club Championship at the Reebok Stadium, Bolton. Tony was on hand to play a key role coming on from the substitutes bench. Two months later celebrations were in order again as Saints dominated the Bradford Bulls in the Challenge Cup Final by 13 points to 6. Again Tony played a key role in helping to subdue the highly rated Bradford threequarters. So it was that Tony had won all available club honours at the tender age of twenty. The season did not end on a high note for the Saints as injuries ravaged the squad. However, Tony had the distinction that season of playing in 32 matches for the Saints and scoring 12 tries in the process. This haul included a hat trick from the full back berth in a 66 points to 16 home league match mauling of Salford on May the 18th.

The 2002 season was the most productive of his career. His second hat trick was a glorious affair as Saints demolished Leeds in the RLCC semi-final at the JJB Stadium. That season yielded a total of 19 tries Tony was on hand to start the 2002 Grand Final against Bradford Bulls. The graft and mobility of Tony and the Saints pack kept them in the game until a fantastic last minute set of six tackles and a Sean Long drop goal unlocked the scores to give Saints another Super League Championship. The 2002 season saw Tony make his 100th. appearance for the Saints in the home league game against Warrington. Tony celebrated this milestone with two tries in a 72 points to 2 drubbing of the local rivals. So it was that Tony had won all available club honours at the tender age of twenty three.

In 2003 Stewart demonstrated yet again his thirst for hard work with tremendous defensive displays and barnstorming runs. Tony scored his 50th try for the Saints against UTC in the fourth round of the Challenge Cup. At the end of that trophyless campaign it was decided to loan Tony to Salford for the 2004 season. That move proved permanent and Tony had played his last match for the Saints. Tony made 140 appearances for the club yielding a total of 56 tries and 224 points.
