Biography of John Stephens | ||||
---|---|---|---|---|
HERITAGE NO : John was only a Saint for the tail end of the Championship winning 1931-32 season. On our player register he was living at 1 Broughton Cottages Ditton in 1933. John joined the Saints in January 1932 and was struck off in April 1932. He never played first team football. Unfortunately we do not have an image of John. There is no record of his playing position or appearances for the reserve team. Steve Fox, the Widnes club historian, kindly provided the following information. John Stephens played 3 first team games for Widnes in October 1933 having appeared on the books that September. He was registered for the following season too. There was a J Stephens playing in the threequarters for the Manchester Ship Canal amateur team in April 1933 so perhaps he played for that team in his spell between Saints and Widnes. In his gallery there is an interesting article postulating why the Saints offloaded John after such a short time on their books. It also mentions the fact that Ernie Shaw was instrumental in bringing Stephens to Knowsley Road. John was born on the July 1st 1909 in Ditton, Lancashire. In 1911 he was living in Smiths Cottages, Hale Road, Ditton with his father Maurice Stephens who was born in 1884 and was working as a General Labourer. His mother Anne nee Reddington was at the same address with his younger brother the recently born Maurice Stephens. He later gained a sister, Catherine who was born in 1923. In 1939 he married Mary Joan Walsh and later they had two children one of whom was named Mary P Stephens Born in 1942 and Christine Catherine Stephens (Born 1948), both births registered in Prescot. John’s wife Mary died in November 1998. The 1939 Census records John as living in with his new bride and working as a Phosphorus Process Foreman in a chemical factory. Dave Dooley | ||||
