Biography of Albert Simm



HERITAGE NO : 320
Albert was an excellent hooker who played 86 matches for the Saints from December 1923 to September 1927. He was very adept at winning the ball at the scrum. Albert was signed from St Helens Recs and doubtless took great pleasure in playing and collecting a winners medal in the 1926 Lancashire Cup Final against their hometown rivals. Albert scored two tries for the Saints. The first was in the away Challenge Cup 73 points to nil thrashing of amateur side Wardley in February 1924 and the second was against top side Swinton.

In 1921 Albert was living In Traverse Street, St. Helens with his parents and four siblings. He worked as a Haulage Hand for Pilkington Bros at their Ravenhead Colliery. Later Albert was a still a Coal Miner living in Wilson Street, St Helens. He died in St Helens in November 1952, aged 61.

A Recs’ stalwart in the early years, even before the team was admitted into the Northern Rugby Union in 1919-20, Albert began as a loose forward with Westfield Amateurs but became a classic hooker of his day. At 5ft 6ins tall and 13st 4lbs, he had bandy legs and was normally overshadowed by his front-row forwards in the scrum, such as Peter Cartwright, Dick Ramsdale and Bob Hull. Yet he was extremely effective and it was no surprise at all when the Saints brought him to Knowsley Road to solve their own particular hooking crisis. Fortunately for the Recs, they had another gem in the making, in young Jack Hughes, together with Oliver Dolan, who would also take on the role by the late 1920s. Even so, his own contribution towards the Recs’ elevation into a competitive team in the 1920s should not be marginalised, although Recs’ supporters sighed when he picked up a Lancashire Cup winner’s medal in 1926 at their own team’s expense, such was his value to the side.

Albert, who lived in Wilson Street, together with the famous Bowen brothers, had played in Recs’ first match as a professional outfit and played over 60 matches for the club. He never scored a try in that time. His job was to get the ball for others to do such things! Ironically, when he began with Westfield Amateurs it was as a loose forward!
