 HERITAGE NO : 62 Albert Sidall by Alex Service One of the casualties of the formation of the Northern Union were the St. Helens Recs, who joined the fledgling organisation twelve months too late and found themselves in the second tier. The rugby league section soon disbanded; the Rec switched to football and Saints took advantage by securing the services of this pacy winger. Depending on what you read in the local press, Sidall originally started his rugby career with Rochdale St. Clements or Rochdale Hornets, but safe to say he was from Rochdale! He seemed to be a competent threequarter, although not a free-scoring player, and made his senior debut for Saints after playing three consecutive friendlies for the club at the back end of the 1897-98 season. This was against Runcorn on 26th March 1898 and he went on to play 19 times for the club, as well as in 7 friendly fixtures. Albert`s last game for the Saints was at Oldham on 28th January, when the visitors last 0-16, although he could say with undoubted pride that he took part in two victories over the Old Enemy, Wigan, during his time at Knowsley Road. A pleasant postscript indeed. Outside rugby Albert was recorded as living in Heights Lane, Rochdale and working as an instructor for the blind. The 1939 Census found him living at 435 Bury Road, Rochdale. He died in his hometown in June 1941 at the age of 68. | ||||
