Peter Shiels by Dave Dooley:

The 6ft 5ins forward, nicknamed `Stretch`, joined Saints in a three year deal in 2001. Peter was a Sydney-born forward with more than 100 first grade outings for Penrith, Perth Western Reds and Newcastle Knights. He suffered a gashed head in the World Club Challenge victory against Brisbane Broncos and was involved in the 2001 Challenge Cup success over the Bradford Bulls.

Peter made the best possible start to his life at the Saints, joining David Fairleigh to help the team wrestle the World Club Championship from Brisbane Broncos by 20 points to 18 at Bolton on January 26th., 2001. His dream start continued as he picked up a Challenge Cup winners medal as Saints outplayed Bradford Bulls in the rain at Twickenham in April 2001.

His first try for the Club was also against the Bulls, this time on the 2nd. June, 2001 as Saints prevailed over Bradford by 38 points to 26 in a thrilling encounter. In his first season Peter notched 6 tries for the Club.

In his second and last season at the club Peter was part of the Grand Final team that defeated the Bulls by 19 points to 18 with a Sean Long goal in the last minute. Stretch managed five tries in 2002. Peter played with an injury for most of the season. In the end Peter decided to terminate his career at the top. He will be remembered for his great offloads in the tackle and his tireless work for the sake of the team - and a great bloke to boot!

In 57 appearances for the Club Peter Shiels scored 11 tries for an aggregate of 44 points. He won all possible team honours in just two glorious years as a Saint!
