Biography of Paul Sculthorpe

HERITAGE NO : 1083
There cant be too many bargains that come with a world record price tag of £375 000 but Scully must have come close to the top of the list. Paul Sculthorpe was born in Burnley on the 22nd. September 1977. The world record for a Rugby League forward was sealed on January 1st. 1998 when Paul joined the Saints from local rivals Warrington. His first match for the Saints was in the away RLCC tie against Featherstone Rovers on February 15th. 1998 when Scully made his mark with a two-try performance as Saints triumphed by 54 points to 24.

By the time the millennium rolled round Paul Sculthorpe had become one of the most complete players ever to have played the game. His versatility was demonstrated by his ability to switch from forwards to backs between games and within games. Injuries to regular half backs Sean Long and Tommy Martyn forced Ian Millward to play Paul at stand off during the 2001 season; the same crisis presented the goal-kicking role to Scully. Sculthorpe excelled in all these roles even resulting in his selection for Great Britain as a half back. His playing qualities were equally extensive. Paul could play the role of a hard-running forward or slot into a more creative role with brilliant offloads, relieving long range kicks, attacking grubber kicks or even drop goals.

In the 1998 season Paul was drafted into a Saints team that was in the process of being rebuilt. Paul was going to be a mainstay of the team for the next eight seasons as the team was reconstructed around Sean Long and Keiron Cunningham ably led by stalwarts Chris Joynt, Paul Newlove and Tommy Martyn. It was a dazzling combination that entertained royally and was virtually guaranteed success for the Saints. In all Paul Sculthorpe started 25 matches in his first season for the Saints and came on as substitute on one occasion scoring eight tries in the process.

The 1999 season brought a new coach to the Saints in the legendary shape of Ellery Hanley. Scully settled into the Saints outfit and was a key member of the team that lifted the Super League Championship trophy as Hanley gave Paul his first experience in the stand off role at the end of that turbulent season. Indeed, Scully played the last six matches in that position as the Saints clicked into a timely gear. Sculthorpe characterised the grit and determination that was so evident in the team that season and was so important in clawing back the Bradford lead to clinch a first Grand Final win at Old Trafford by 8 points to 6. In all Scully made 31 appearances that season scoring 11 tries.

The 2000 season brought Ian Millward to the club and Paul played brilliantly in the pack for most of the season only reverting to standoff on four occasions. Under Millward Saints developed a scintillating style of play that strung together a long unbeaten run of 11 matches in the first half of the league campaign. Besides netting 8 tries during the campaign Paul dropped three vital drop goals for the Saints including a one-pointer against Wigan in the Super League Grand Final as Saints romped to a second successive Championship.

The 2001 season was a traumatic one for the Saints as a disastrous run of injuries disrupted the second half of the season for the Champions. However, "Cometh the hour, cometh the man" and Paul Sculthorpe accepted the responsibility to inspire a Saints side with stunning individual performances throughout the campaign. Paul was instrumental in the one of Saints greatest ever nights, as Brisbane Broncos were overcome in a Bolton blizzard to capture the World Championship by 20 points to 18. As the teams were locked at 18 points each Paul was the man on the spot to push saints into a one point lead with a brilliantly taken drop goal. Again he was a great influence as Saints dominated Bradford Bulls in the 2001 Challenge Cup Final and Saints seemed set to retain all the trophies on offer. However, as a late challenge on Sean Long in the away match at Huddersfield ended the scrum halfs season the responsibility of goal-kicking and the stand off berth were handed to Scully. In a magnificent effort Paul ended the season with 27 tries and 82 goals for a grand tally of 273 points. This tally included two hat tricks against Warrington and Leeds. His performances were capped with the prestigious "Man of Steel" award presented to the outstanding player in the competition. Nevertheless, these heroics were not enough to retain the Championship as injuries to Long, Fairleigh and Newlove ruined Saints climax to the season. Paul completed the year playing an important role in the Great Britain team in the 2001 Ashes series.

The 2002 campaign witnessed Paul Sculthorpe in scintillating form yet again. The team finished the year at the top of the table with Paul making 33 appearances and scoring 17 tries and kicking 114 goals and a drop goal in the process for a total of 273 points. This points spree include two ten-goal performances against Hull and Warrington. The 2002 Grand Final saw Paul collect his third Championship ring as Saints earned a last minute victory over the now paranoid Bradford Bulls by 19 points to 18. Pauls brilliance was rewarded with the award of the "Man of Steel", the first time a player had won the accolade in successive seasons.

The 2003 season brought niggling injuries for Paul that seemed to disrupt the Saints set-up as the campaign progressed. A landmark points scoring haul was amassed by Paul on the 7th of July as Scully collected 30 points from 11 goals and 4 tries. However, the Saints were to end the season with an empty trophy cabinet.

In the 2004 season Saints and Scully had made a whirlwind start to the campaign playing some of the finest rugby ever witnessed at Knowsley Road. Paul started the season as a proud captain of the Saints and led like a lion. The Challenge Cup road to Cardiff saw Saints collecting the biggest scalps in the game. A stunning away victory against Bradford was followed up with home victories against Leeds and Hull both of whom showed tremendous resistance. A high flying and confident Huddersfield team were dumped by forty points in the glorious Warrington sunshine on semi-final day. Scully stood tall throughout this period exhibiting great flair in attack and remained solid in the Saints defence. The reward at the start of his testimonial season was a fourth Challenge Cup winners medal as Saints prevailed over the old enemy by 32 points to 16 in the Costa del Cardiff.

At the end of that campaign of 2004 he had already made almost 200 appearances for the club and scored 100 tries, kicking 285 goals and dropping eight goals for an impressive aggregate of 978 points. Having become only the fourth Saints player to score 100 tries and kick 100 goals, Scully is agonisingly close to his next two landmarks 200 club appearances and 1000 points for the Saints. Paul was a leading light in the end of season Tri-Natiuons tournament which ended in bitter disappointment following a heavy defeat in the Final against Australia.

The 2005 season was a curates egg for Paul with some excellent leadership and game displays marred by another injury which decimated the Saints campaign. After finishing top of the league two play-off defeats and a semi-final defeat to Hull in the Challenge Cup proved a disappointing end to the campaign. The end of season injury meant that Paul could not take up his appointment as Great Britain captain for the Tr-Nations series.

The 2006 season saw Saints win all the trophies in the domestic game. Scullys long held ambition to lead his country came to fruition in the mid-season Test Match against New Zealand at his beloved Knowsley Road. Sadly, Pauls match only latsed 15 minutes as he was sidelined again with another leg injury. The side under Pauls leadership ended the league campaign 8 points clear of nearest challengers Hull FC. A glorious run in the Challenge Cup witnessed Paul lift that trophy for the second time in three years with a 42 points to 12 victory over Huddersfield Giants. The only tinge of disappointment was Scullys obvious leg injury as Paul struggled with the pressures of the super-fast modern game. As the Saints marched towards another Grand Final Paul made the difficult decision to end his personal season and book in for an operation in an attempt to regain full bodily functions.

Paul regained fitness in time for the World Club Championship game against Brisbane Broncos on the 23rd of February 2007. What a return he made. Scully inspired his team with a lovely timed run to put the Saints back in the game. He also kicked three goals to cap a fine individual display on a night that saw the Saints crowned World Champions. Unfortunately, this was the highlight of the year for Paul as further injuries curtailed his appearances to just 12 matches in that campaign.

His last season again was dogged by injuries and frustration culminating in his final appearance in the 2008 Challenge Cup Final against Hull FC. Despite a victory and another winners medal to the collection, his short stay on the pitch before another injury brought the curtain down on a fantastic career.

On retirement Paul was retained by the club to utilise his personal and professional skills in attracting commercial enterprises to the club. If his efforts off the field are half as good as his on the field displays then St Helens are set to be a wealthy club for a long time to come. Paul was also inducted into the Saints Players Association Hall of Fame at their Annual Luncheon in 2015.
