 HERITAGE NO : 443 Henry Roughsedge by Alex Service When he made his post-war Saints' debut against Workington, on 12th October 1946, the St. Helens Newspaper talked about "the ex-Recs and Broughton Rangers forward Roughsedge." Henry was actually was on the books of the City Road club in 1936-37 and lived in Bewsey Street, Thatto Heath. Yet he began his career at Knowsley Road, with two first team appearances, against Broughton Rangers and Bramley in February 1936. A powerful scrummager, Henry went on to play 21 times for the club after the Workington game (Saints won 12-7) but we are unsure about his sporting career after his second spell at Knowsley Road. His great niece, Karen Unsworth, kindly informed us that he emigrated to Australia in 1951 along with his wife and two daughters. Henry died in Wollongong, New South Wales in May 1987 at the age of 72. In England Henry had worked as a Brick Loader which would have involved a great deal of heavy work. | ||||
