Richard Rothwell made 68 appearances in three seasons for Wigan, scoring 10 tries and kicking 28 goals before his transfer to St. Helens. A scrum-half who made his debut against Holbeck on 23rd January 1904, Richard made 16 appearances in his first season for the St.Helens club and scored a try and also kicked a goal. Universally known as Dicky, he worked in the Borough Council`s Cleansing Department. He also worked at a later date for the LMS Railway Company, where he was Foreman and Supervisor in the goods yard at Radcliffe.

He enjoyed a particularly successful campaign in 1904-05, when he made 16 appearances and scored five tries. Dicky does not appear for the First Team in 1905-06, made 3 appearances in 1906-07 and a solitary one in 1907-08. The 1939 Census finds Dicky living in Park Street, Radcliffe. It is believed that Dicky died at Jericho Hospital, Bury, at the age of 65 on 3rd December 1939.
