CUP DEBUT FOR ROBBIE AT WEMBLEY! By Denis Whittle

A one-time Saints star made his own remarkable piece of history by becoming the club's only player to make his first Challenge Cup appearance in the code's Final showdown. And it became a tale of Boy's Own dimensions both for Roy Robinson and Saints, as they lifted the trophy by defeating Halifax 13-2 in 1956, so ending a 59-year drought in that competition.

A strapping 5ft 10in 14 stone second rower, Roy was reared in Wilson Street, thereby qualifying as a Bruk lad, which was a stretch of waste land near Beechams on which many oval-ball hopefuls cut their Rugby League teeth. He also honed his handling and tackling flair at Rivington Road School prior to signing for Saints, for whom he made 59 appearances and touched down on 14 occasions.

His big Wembley chance arrived just 48 hours before kick-off, when Roy was told by Saints coach Jim Sullivan that he was in the side because another local product, Walter Delves, had cried off through injury. A Pilkington worker, Roy wound up his Rugby League career with Barrow and Warrington, and then he and his wife Doreen owned the Chocolate Box sweet shop and newsagents in Duke Street from 1981 to 1995.

A dab-hand at snooker and dominoes at Windle Labour club, Robbie died at his home in Cowley Hill Lane at the age of 68 in 1999. Just before he passed away better-half Doreen and family asked me to come to his bedside to recall his Wembley heroics. A memory-jerking if sombre duty no doubt, but one that I considered a privilege having known the rampaging Robinson since those stirring games fought out within the shadow of Beecham's clock.
