Biography of Alf Robinson

HERITAGE NO : 267
Alf Robinson by Alex Service

Born in St. Helens in 1894, the 1901 Census returns tell us that Alf lived in Raglan Street and that his father John was a glass bottle worker, born in Newcastle. Fast forward to 1911 and Alf is listed as a glass polisher, aged 16 and living in Wilson Street with his mother Anne. He was at the same residence when he made his debut for the Saints against local rivals Recs on 3 May 1919 at City Road, when the visitors lost 2-8. However Alf became a valued member of the St Helens team during the first full season of rugby league after the First World War, making 30 appearances. He was mostly a back rower, but could operate with equal effectiveness in the front row too. Alf scored 9 tries during his career as a Saint and was certainly no slouch in the loose.

Things were not easy at Knowsley Road when Alf played. Finances were always a problem and the Directors struggled to assemble a team that would compete for major honours. Alf played his last game for the seniors on 29 september 1923 at Keighley. The back row that day was Hilton, Robinson and Ernie Shaw, the former Wigan loose forward. One of his greatest matches was undoubtedly the game against Salford at Knowsley Road on 10 August 1921 when Alf scored three tries from the front row position, an unusual feat indeed in those days. The Saints won 16-6 and he formed a fearsome front row with Benny Briers and Bill Clarey.

Alf is yet another notable rugby product of the famous Bruk area of the St. Helens town centre and the family link continued when his son Roy was signed by the Saints and went on to play at Wembley in 1956. Apparently Alf worked as a glass polisher and on the railways as a plate layer. Alf finished his working life as a Park Ranger. He passed away in December1961, aged 68.
