Biography of Sam Rimmer



HERITAGE NO : 14
A tough, durable forward, Sam Rimmer played in the first ever Northern Union game for the Saints against Rochdale Hornets on the 7th September 1895. It was a winning start and he continued to play another 44 matches for the Saints. A former member of the Sutton junior team, he played most of his matches in the pack and was a stalwart in the early days for the Saints. In fact Rimmer finished his career in the 1897 Challenge Cup Final against Batley when a brave St Helens outfit were downed by the men from Yorkshire. Sam was employed as a labourer in a local glass house. Tragically, he died in April 1903 at young age of 32.
