Tom Reynolds by SHS

Born in St. Helens in 1868, Tom was a First Team regular at Knowsley Road for three seasons. A durable forward, he made his debut in the first-ever Northern Union match played by the club, at home to Rochdale Hornets, on 7th September 1895. The Saints won 8-3 and Tom took his place amongst seven other forwards that afternoon: Gladwin, Ashcroft, McKay, Briers, Caveney, Dale, Rimmer and Reynolds. Things were a lot different in those days and the forwards would form a scrum literally in ad hoc style to try and get the ball for the threequarters. Reynolds went on to score just one try, against Stockport, in his final season, when the Saints won 13-3.

Tom went on to play in the inaugural Challenge Cup final against Batley at Headingley, in 1897, although Saints could not bring home the gleaming trophy and would have to wait until 1956 for the privilege. He played his last match against Runcorn in the away fixture on 15th April 1899, when the Saints lost 8-11. When Saints played Broughton Rangers at Knowsley Road in September 1900, talk was of Reynolds the ex-St. Helens man, who was one of the stars for the visitors. According to records, a Tom Reynolds lived in Lugsmore Lane in Thatto Heath and was a glass works labourer. When Tom signed for Broughton Rangers he relocated to Salford where he could be found residing in Havelock Street in 1939. Indeed Tom died in Salford in March 1946 at the age of 77. If anyone has any further information about this player, we would like to hear from you. Tom must also not be confused with the famous St. Helens RFC correspondent of the same name, who plied his trade with the St. Helens Newspaper in the 1920s and 1930s.
