Johannes Albertus Prinsloo by Dave Dooley:
Johannes Albertus Prinsloo was born in South Africa. He was a speedster for the club playing over 80 matches as a winger. Jan was signed from the South African Rugby Union on 14th., October, 1958 and made his debut against Rochdale Hornets on the 8th. November 1958. In 89 matches for the Saints Jan scored 70 tries, kicked no goals for a total points aggregate of 210 points. This represented a highly creditable strike rate of 78.65 tries per 100 matches.

He scored his first try for the first team as part of a two try debut against Rochdale Hornets. That season he scored hat-tricks against Salford and Blackpool Borough for a season total of 27 tries from 31 games.

Jan played a vital part in finishing dazzling moves for many a Saints victory including the sensational 1959 Championship Final win by 44 points to 22 over a great Hunslet side where he exhibited a fabulous touchline dash rounded off with his trademark `swallow dive` over the tryline.

In the 1959/60 season Jan scored 4 tries against Liverpool City and three tries against Hull, finishing the season with 29 tries from 38 matches.

The following year brought more success with a hat-trick of tries against Workington Town. In 1960 Jan also won a Lancashire Cup winners medal when the Saints defeated Swinton by 15 points to 9 in front of a crowd of over 31 000 at Central Park.

His final match for the Club was against Warrington on the 7th January, 1961. The transferring of both Jan Prinsloo to Wakefield Trinity and Frank Carlton to Wigan paved the way for a £11 000 World Record transfer to bring Mick Sullivan to Knowsley Road.

Jan Prinsloo had the daunting task of wearing the Saints number five jersey at the same time as Tom Van Vollenhoven was setting the whole game on fire on the other wing. His record and strike-rate demonstrates what a fine finisher Jan Prinsloo was in our game.

Sadly Jan died in Wellington, South Africa in June 1966 aged just 31.
