Eric Prescott was essentially a back-row forward. Yet he came to prominence as a somewhat surprise selection at the expense of Frank Wilson in the number 5 jersey for the 1970 Championship Final at Odsal against Leeds. The gamble most certainly paid off, as the Saints won 24-12 and Eric scored two blistering tries. Unfortunately, Eric was to miss out in the 1972 Challenge Cup final against Leeds and the Championship final the following week, resulting in his move to Salford for a record �13,500. At six feet and just over 14 stones, Eric was a superb all-round footballer, with a high work-rate and boundless enthusiasm.
He won two Division One titles with a fabulous Salford side and gained further honours with a move to Widnes for �20,000 in 1981, where he achieved his dream of Challenge Cup glory with the Chemics. Eric later returned to Salford and played well into his thirties. He was a superb ambassador for Rugby League and can quite justifiably be labelled as one of the best un-capped players of his generation. His son, Stephen, found fame with the Saints and Hull as a full-back.
