A further appreciation of Arthur Pimblett by SHS

By the mid 1950s, the Saints were well on their way to claiming a place in the elite of rugby league and could boast a powerful squad that could offer cover in every position. At full-back was Welsh international Glyn Moses, but local lad Arthur Pimblett was a more than capable reserve and he became a reliable stalwart at Knowsley Road for several years before his transfer to Widnes.

Arthur had an excellent rugby league pedigree. His Uncle was Albert Pimblett, who found fame as a winger with the old St Helens Recs team before the War and became an international centre at Warrington. Arthur went to St Austins School in Thatto Heath, a famous rugby league nursery, including such famous names as Austin Rhodes, Alex Murphy and Tommy Finn. Arthur played schoolboy rugby against future Saints’ star Todder Dickinson from Parr Central and the two later graduated to the Town team. Arthur played at centre and full-back, although it was his displays in the number one jersey that earned him excellent reviews in the Saints’ A and B teams later.

Arthur became established in the A team at full-back and gained a reputation as a brilliant goal-kicker. He once booted over 11 goals in a Lancashire Shield match for the A team against Liverpool City at Knowsley Road on 27th August 1955. Future scrum-half sensation Alex Murphy also scored two dazzling tries. Pimblett made his senior bow against Halifax in a league match at Knowsley Road 0n 12th November 1955, when he kicked 2 goals in a 13-8 success. Austin Rhodes also kicked 3, who had become the regular kicker following the injury to stand-off Peter Metcalfe. Full-back Glyn Moses was nailed on at full-back and with Rhodes and Murphy dominating the halves, first team chances for Arthur were relatively few. When he was selected, he proved to be a more than capable replacement, who would have walked into the first team’s of many of the top clubs in the league at the time.

His 19 appearances included 42 goals and he booted over 7 in what was to be his final appearance, against on 5th October 1957, when Saints beat Huddersfield 35-13 at Fartown. Arthur played in a Lancashire Cup semi-final against Oldham in 1957-58, although he did not win major honours at Knowsley Road, a great pity. He worked at Pilkingtons and lived in Sutton Heath Road when he first started to play in the seniors.

Arthur, who hung up his boots in 1962, after joining Widnes, enjoyed former player functions at the old Knowsley Road ground and one of his last was when Cumbrian second-rower Dick Huddart returned from Australia to see family and friends. Widower Arthur passed away in 2007 aged 72, after being taken ill at his Laffak home.
