Biography of Frank Phillips

HERITAGE NO : 631

Frank played his only game for the first team in the heavy away league defeat by Hunslet by 38 points to 5 on the 1st December 1945. He played at full back in this match. we do know quite a bit about Frank and his family. His father Joseph was born in Leigh in November 1891 and died in 1960. His mother’s maiden name was Eckersley and universally known as Maggie. Frank was a coal miner like his father and resided in the Bickershaw area. Frank married Evelyn Berry in 1940. He had two brothers Sydney born in April 1921 and Kenneth born in November 1924. Both brothers appear on the 1939 Census which would indicate that they are deceased. Frank’s record is redacted which indicates that he is still with us. Jimmy Goodier remembers Frank very well as they both played extensively in the A team. Jimmy relates that Frank was nicknamed the rabbit as his party piece was to burrow his way through the opposition. Can you help the SHS by supplying a photograph or any other personal or playing details?
