Biography of Arthur Pendleton |
---|
HERITAGE NO : 567 Arthur Pendleton by Alex Service During the 1942-43 rugby league season, Arthur Stanley Pendleton, from Moss Bank, played in three friendly matches for the Saints and six competitive games, including four Challenge Cup ties! The St. Helens Reporter correspondent, Clericus, was full of praise for the new scrum-half who played for the Saints in the friendly at Barrow [26-01-1943]: "They introduced a new scrum-half named Stanley Pendleton, signed a week ago from St Helens Old Boys [RUFC]. Pendleton, who is five feet seven and ten stones is eighteen years old, has done some gallant service and has been coveted by St. Helens. He gave such a great show at Barrow that both sets of Directors were delighted with his showing. He is fast away from the scrum, gives his out-half every chance and varies his plan splendidly. He passes long and fast and can pitch to centre over the out-half. Pendleton is a product of Cowley football and I trust they will be able to obtain before long his late partner, Beasley, who is pretty well as clever and who would make a worthy partner". Interestingly enough, the Saints did go on to sign Frank Beasley, but not Pendleton! His full debut was in the War Emergency League at Oldham, when Saints lost 6-12. His last match was also against the Roughyeds, this time at Knowsley Road in a second round, second leg Challenge Cup tie. Saints lost 5-20. Frank Balmer was his half-back partner that afternoon. Despite his initial brilliance, Arthur [or Stanley, as the papers referred to him] did not figure in Saints' future plans, for whatever reason. After all, these were uncertain times. Arthur passed away in July 2007 aged 64. |
