 HERITAGE NO : 487 Jimmy Pendlebury by Alex Service The Rugby League Registers tell us that Jimmy lived in Wigan, in Holland Street, when he signed for the Saints in the late 1930s. Jimmy could operate in the centres and at full-back with equal effectiveness and he made his debut for the Saints in the number one jersey at Barrow on 17th September 1938. The visitors lost 2-23 in this particular league match and Jimmy was to play his final game on 29th February 1940 in the War Emergency League against Liverpool Stanley at Knowsley Road. St. Helens won 18-8 and the three quarter line that day, with Pendlebury at full-back read as follows: Stan Powell, Jimmy Stott, Jack Waring and Harry Pimblett. Jimmy later signed for Leigh [Heritage Number 515] and played in 16 matches between 1940-46, kicking 23 goals. Born in Barnsley, Yorkshire in 1921 Jimmy was living in Bridge Street, Wigan. He appeared to be visiting his brother Fred who worked at the Pemberton Colliery. The brothers were staying with their uncle and Jimmy could well have still been living in Barnsley. He married Mary Dempsey in October 1938 in Wigan. He was a General Labourer and in 1939 he was living in Holland Street, Wigan. Jimmy died in Wigan in September 1997, at the age of 83.
