Walter was a clever ball-distributing prop forward who was, by his own admission short of a yard or two of pace. Walter Norris played schoolboy rugby in Warrington before signing for his hometown team in 1938 for just 25 pounds! Unfortunately, the War interrupted his career, although he did `guest` for Wigan on occasions and played rugby union for the Northampton club and the Army XV in the Middle East.

After hostilities ceased, he returned to Warrington and played in the legendary Brian Bevan`s first match. A possible move to Barrow fell through and he joined St.Helens after a successful trial in the `A` team. Walter made nearly 100 appearances before osteoarthritis of the ankle ended his career in 1951. He became a teacher in 1954 and devoted his spare time to the development of schoolboy rugby league for the next thirty years. The only Life Member of both the Lancashire and Yorkshire Schools Rugby League Associations, Walter was still showing budding youngsters the art of scrimmaging at the age of 61 as Coach of the English Schools Rugby League team.

His Saints career spanned five seasons after making a winning start with the club on his debut on the 25th of January 1947, as the Saints defeated Hull KR by 29 points to 16 at Knowsley Road. His first try for the club came in the last match of the same season as Walter helped defeat Rochdale Hornets by 26 points to 4. In almost 100 matches for the club he scored just two tries against Bramley and Rochdale Hornets.

In 1921 Walter was living in Oldham Street, Warrington. He lived with his father Joseph a Wire Drawer, and his mother Ivy.He died in Warrington in March 2004, aged 84.
