Biography of John Moulsdale |
---|
HERITAGE NO : 206 John Moulsdale by SHS A local lad and a regular in the A team, John was called up into the full-back position for his full debut against Wigan on Boxing Day 1910. Replacing the legendary Jum Turtill was never going to be easy and Saints were beaten 6-18 by their deadly rivals at Knowsley Road, but John kept his place in the interim, making six appearances before the return of the New Zealander. The team had won three and lost three, but the last match in the sequence was at Coventry, on 14th January, the newcomers in the Northern Union. Saints won 14-2. “Yewlett at full-back was not in anything like his best form,” said the Coventry Evening Telegraph, “and appeared weak by comparison with Mosedale the St Helens back, who was a tower of strength for the visitors.” Often referred to as Mosedale in the texts, John impressed the Midlanders to such a degree that they went on to sign him. He fully justified his signing in the forthcoming matches for his new club. In a narrow 13-14 loss at Swinton, The Kenilworth Advertiser was fulsome in its praise: “Coventry played for the first time their new full-back J. Mosedale late of St Helens and he created a good impression.” John lasted a season with Coventry, before Saints re-signed him by the end of February 1912, together with Jimmy Shallcross of Wigan and Tom Browning of Abertillery. Yet John never made any further senior appearances at Knowsley Road. The presence of Turtill and Tom Barton must have been a factor, although he clearly had ability as a last line of defence. It is believed that in the early part of the century he had moved from Astley near Leigh to live in Derbyshire Hill Road, Parr, St Helens and his occupation was a coal hewer and General Labourer. In 1939 he was living in Epsom Street, St Helens where he worked as an ARP Warden. |
