Biography of William Morgan

HERITAGE NO : 439
William Morgan by Alex Service

We do not have all that much information about this player, but it is believed that he started out at St. Helens Recreation in the later 1920s and early 1930s, from the Haresfinch Hornets junior team. At one point he was crossed off the register at City Road and the next we hear of him is when he signed for Saints at the start of the 1935-36 season. From the Rugby League Registers, his address is in Park Road, so it is presumed that he is a local product. He could play either scrum-half or stand-off and made his debut at 7 at Station Road, Swinton on 28th September 1935, when the Saints were on the end of a 3-46 hammering. Stan Powell was his half-back partner. His last match for the club in the First Team was at Broughton Rangers on 2nd January 1937, when he wore the 7 jersey, with Jackie Bradbury as his stand-off. Alas, the Saints were on the end of a 5-23 reversal. We have no information as to Williams career after his last match. He died in January 2000, aged 88 and his death was registered in Knowsley. If anyone has any information, we would be glad to receive it.

Further input on this players career has been provided by Leigh Historian Mike Latham:

This could be the same chap who played 7 games for Wigan Highfield in 1932-33. He did not play for London Highfield but may have made one appearance for Liverpool Stanley in 1934-35 which may tie in with him joining Saints.

On the 1932-33 RFL register he is shown as living at 47 Stanley St, St Helens. He joined Wigan Highfield from Haresfinch in Sep 1932 His debut was at stand off on 19 Nov 1932 v Oldham (h) Lost 6-8. Bill then played the next 5 games at scrumhalf v Swinton (a) L 0-27, Swinton (h) L 0-21, Rochdale (a) L 5-25, Bramley (h) W 9-4 and Halifax (h) on Christmas Eve L 3-22. He missed two games and then his last game was at centre on 31 Dec 1932 v Batley (a) W 10-7. He was struck off the Highfield register in Nov 1933.

A player called Morgan played on the wing for Liverpool Stanley v Broughton Rangers (a) on 29 Sep 1934 but I am not certain this was him. Stanley signed an H Morgan from New Springs in Sep 1934 so this was most probably him.

Many thanks to Mike for his additional biographical information.
