On 2nd September 1911, Richard Molyneux made his debut for Saints as centre to Tom Barton at home to Barrow. He was one of two players to join the club from the Wigan area. Richard came from the Highfield junior team; stand-off George Scholes also came to Knowlsey Road from Pemberton Rovers. As for Richard, he seemed to have had a rather subdued first match. 'Enthusiast' in the St. Helens Reporter wrote the following: 'Molyneux seemed rather over-awed by the importance of the occasion and I saw little of him in attack, but on the defence was quite good and tackled well. He seemed rather deficient in initiative, but on the whole did sufficiently well to merit further trial'.

Richard certainly carved out a niche for himself with the Saints and was, arguably, the perfect 'utility back', at various times occupying the wing, centre [4], stand-off and full-back roles for the club. He played against the visiting Australians at left centre in October 1911 and scored four tries from full-back in the 51-9 thrashing of Coventry on 15th February 1913, so he certainly knew his way to the line! His final match for St. Helens was at home to Warrington on 2nd January 1915 ' the last 'full' season before hostilities took over. He scored a try from full-back once again. Given the fact that he rarely missed a match, he was a valuable player to have, which, together with his utility value, made him a real favourite with the Knowsley Road crowd.

Richard went on to play for Salford for a season in 1921-22 and played against his former club. Richard was living with his parents at 100 Lime Street, Wigan in 1911 and working as a coal miner. He died in October 1933 in Wigan at the age of 40. If you have any further information, we would like to hear from you.
