Biography of David McPhail |
---|
HERITAGE NO : 198 David McPhail by Alex Service and Keith Bowen According to "A History of Wigan RL" published in 1946 David McPhail was a centre threequarter who came to Wigan from New Zealand in distinguished company. He landed at Plymouth aboard the S.S. Arawa, on 15th November, 1909, together with the great Lance Todd. Lance was returning to this country. McPhail played his first match for Wigan in the A team against Widnes on 27th November 1909. In New Zealand he captained the Sydenham (Christchurch) club and he played for the Canterbury Inter-Provincial team for several seasons. These games are the equivalent to Home Internationals here. McPhail was fast, being the 100 yards amateur champion of the Canterbury Centre. David did not represent his country at Test Match level, however. On September 2nd 1910, Wigan transferred him to St Helens. The Saints took on several players surplus to requirements at Wigan in those days, but there was the extra attraction of David going to a club where his friends and fellow New Zealanders Arthur Kelly and Hubert Sydney Turtill were playing. David made his debut against Oldham on 3rd September 1910 in the left centre position what was supposed to be a season choc full of promise at Knowsley Road. Alas it was not to be. David made just 10 appearances before leaving the club at the end of the campaign. Billy Belshaw, a signing from the Wigan Athletic junior club, took over his position. It is believed he retired from the game possibly as a result of injury and went back to New Zealand. The New Zealand World War One Reserve Lists find David working as a farmer in Templeton, a settlement close to Canterbury. Later David can be found on the Electoral rolls living in Christchurch from 1940 to the 1960s. |
