It is by a strange quirk of fate that Teddy found fame with Rochdale Hornets instead of his home-town team. Probably best described as the ultimate utility player, who could operate with equal effectiveness at half-back or in the threequarter line, Teddy first went to Knowsley Road before the First World War and captained the Saints before moving to Hornets in January 1922. A county player, with great pace, Teddy became the first St.Helens-born player to win a Challenge Cup Winners medal, when Hornets beat Hull at Headingley in the 1922 final.

Teddy was later transferred to Dewsbury on 7th August 1924 before re-joining his original team in 1926-27. "My grandfather enjoyed his rugby and out of all the clubs he played for, he always thought of Knowsley Road as his true home," says Mike McLoughlin. "Rugby was in his family, with his brother Dan also a fine player. He played for the Army regiments Rugby Union team in India, winning the Calcutta Cup, Bombay Cup and All India Cup." In 1939 Teddy was living in Windle City, St Helens and working as a bowling green grounds man. He died in his hometown in June 1978 at the age of 86.
