Thomas McKinney by Dave Dooley:
Tom McKinney was a stalwart for the club playing 93 matches as a hooker. After signing from Warrington on the 22nd January 1957 for £2000 he made his debut against Barrow four days later. At the time Saints were struggling to win the ball from set scrums, a vital aspect of the game in that period of unlimited possession football.

In 93 matches for the Saints Tom scored 11 tries, kicked 5 goals for a total points aggregate of 43 points.

Born in Ballymena, Tom was one of a handful of `genuine` Irishmen to play for Great Britain. In the 1954 Australasian Tour he was brought out of the scrum by Darcy Lawlor, Australia`s most controversial referee at the time, and accused of biting. A flabbergasted McKinney just opened his mouth to reveal his toothless gums! Whilst at the Saints Tom was selected to play in the 1957 World Cup in Australia. He played Rugby Union for the Scottish side Jedforest before signing professional forms for Salford.

Tom won a Championship medal with the Saints in 1958-59. His final match for the Club was against Leigh on the Christmas Day, 1959 after which he was transferred to Salford the club from which he was selected to join the 1954 Australian Tour.

Tom died in Salford in November 1999, aged 72.
