Brian McGinn by Dave Dooley:
Brian McGinn was an exciting centre for the club playing over 100 matches in the late fifties and early sixties. Born on the 28th. April 1940 in St Helens, he signed for the Club from the famous RL hotbed, Blackbrook ARL club, on 18th. June 1956. Brian spent the next two seasons learning his trade in the `A` Team.
Brian Mc Ginn made his debut against Liverpool City in the 40 to 20 points away victory on the 28th. March 1959. What a debut that was; Brian greatly impressed as an eighteen year old scoring a try and kicked 5 goals. So much so, that after only eight matches in the first team Brian was selected to play in the 1959 Championship Final against Hunslet just two months later. Fast and elusive with a superb side-step Brian beat off stiff opposition to capture the number four Saints shirt for the next three seasons.

Brian also won a Lancashire Cup winners medal when the Saints defeated Swinton by 15 points to 9 in front of a crowd of over 31 000 at Central Park in the 1960 Final. He repeated the pleasure in the same competition against the same opposition one season later, this time the victory score was 25 points to 9.

In the 1960/61 season Brian scored an outstanding try in the third round Challenge Cup ties against Swinton at Knowsley Road beating several desperate defenders in a weaving run to score beneath the Edington End posts. Brian was an automatic selection for the 1961 Challenge Cup winning side as the Saints triumphed over arch-rivals Wigan by 12 points to 6.

Brian McGinn played 118 matches for the club. He scored 34 tries and kicked no goals for an aggregate score of 134 points.

The 1962/63 season was a transitional one for the Saints as the Club felt a need to build a new side to continue to challenge for the game`s top honours. He was facing increased competition for a centre berth from Keith Northey and Alan Briers. His final match for the Club was against Oldham on the 6th.of May, 1963 towards the end of the `big freeze` season. Brian subsequently retired from the game at the tender age of 23 after gaining a full set of winners` medals in a relatively short career span.
