 HERITAGE NO : 515 McDowell was a guest player from the Widnes club who played 19 matches for the Saints in World War Two between September 1941 and May 1942. He was a second row forward who scored one try against Dewsbury in January 1942. Hughie played 269 matches for Widnes in the 1930s, scoring 34 tries and kicking 11goals. He featured in Challenge Cup and other trophy winning teams.Hughie also gained an international cap for England against France in 1939. In 1921 Hughie was living in Moss Bank Road, Widnes. He lived with his father, Robert a Labourer with the Bowman’s Chemical Works, mother Elizabeth, three brothers and two sisters.In 1939 he was living in Millfield Road, Widnes and worked as a Lithophone Maker.
