Biography of Jarrod McCracken

HERITAGE NO : 1036
Jarrod McCracken by Alex Service

Jarrod McCracken came to the Saints on a short term contract during the 1992-93 season and quickly became a crowd favourite with his physical approach. He never took a backward step, typified in the rambustious derby matches with Wigan, including the last-ever Lancashire Cup final, played at Knowsley Road. Needless to say he became an instant crowd favourite, with some memorable king hits to his name. Jarrod played in the centre for the Saints, but could play with equal effectiveness in the back row.
The son of former New Zealand full-back Ken McCracken, Jarrod also went on to represent his native country on many occasions. He began his career at Glenora Bears and went to Australia in 1989 with the North Sydney Bears as part of his development. He found fame with the Canterbury Bankstown Bulldogs from 1991-1995, during which time he spent his off season with the Saints. He made his debut for the Red and Whites against Wakefield Trinity at Knowsley Road in a 24-12 success and played his final match on 22nd January against Halifax in a 18-16 victory. He made 21 appearances scoring 5 tries. His departure cost Saints dear in their quest to match Wigan in the race for major honours, just when a major breakthrough seemed imminent.
Jarrod went on to join Parramatta Eels in the mid 1990s before joining the new Wests Tigers franchise in 2000, when he became the first club captain. In Round 15 of that year's competition, his career was ended after a spear tackle in the game against Melbourne Storm, leading to a court case and compensation for damages inflicted.
Jarrod is currently a major property developer in Australia, particularly associated with the Townsville area. He currently lives in Airlie Beach in Queensland, a far cry from those wintry days in the Stones Bitter Championship with mighty St.Helens!
