John made his debut at Swinton, on 13th September 1919. St.Helens lost 5-7 and John was on the right wing, with Tommy Gormley as his centre. His last match for the club was in the 8-17 defeat at Halifax on 22nd November, with John on the left wing this time. He worked in a glass works as a Railway Foreman. In 1939 he was living in Kirkland Street, StHelens. His name appears on the Council list of bereavements and he passed away in June 1965, aged 72.
