|One of the great stars of the Post WW1 St Helens Recs team, Joe played for the Saints in the War Emergency League. He was to become a most gifted centre with our local rivals.|
In the 1917-18 season he scored a try and kicked one goal in the 8 points to 3 victory over Warrington. He was prominent in the wing position that day. In the previous season Joe had even played in the second row for the Saints against Leigh.
His final outing for the Saints was against his team of the future, St Helnes Recs on Christmas Day 1918, just over month after the end of World War One. Joe must have realised which side of the bread had the thicker butter as the Recs dominated proceedings running out winners by 20 ppoints to nil.
Joe signed up for the Royal Field Artillery during the First World War.
Thanks to Kenneth McComas for the great image of Joe
