|Michael Matthews by SHS |
Mchael was a local hooker who had a tough baptism of fire when he made his debut against Wigan on 27th December 1938. The Wigan hooker beat him in the scrums by a ratio of 2-1, thus hastening the final result which was a resounding 28-2 victory in front of over 11,000 at Knowsley Road. He was officially signed on three days later in time for his second and last match against Featherstone Rovers. He was a General Labourer and in 1939 was recuperating in Eccleston Hall Sainitorium, Holme Road, St Helens. This illness might explain his sudden slip from the Knowsley Road limelight. He died in June 1964, aged 44. If you know anything further about this particular player please contact us.
